Steve Rimmer

Steve had a motorcycle accident in May 2003 and as a result is paraplegic at level T4. He is married with two daughters and became involved in Peer Support as a volunteer in the autumn of 2004. As well as providing peer support at the Southport Centre, Steve is also responsible for co-ordinating Peer Support activities in the North West region, which covers the Southport, Oswestry and Belfast SCI Centres.

The Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport is fortunate in that it receives excellent support locally.

The SIA Merseyside Group meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Glaxo Centre, Norton Street, Liverpool. The group fundraises and also meets socially periodically.

The Spinal Unit Action Group (SUAG) operate locally and supports the Centre. Further details of their activities are included on the website www.suag.co.uk  Additionally SUAG provide weekly coffee and monthly dining evenings at the Centre, which during the summer months is a BBQ.

The Southport Sports and Social Club operate at the Centre too. They provide support to patients who have an interest in becoming involved in sport. They have active tennis and table tennis sections at the Centre and have developed links with a ski school in Cumbria. The club has fielded wheelchair basketball and rugby teams in the past and is looking to develop these again.

The Greenbank project in Liverpool is worthy of a visit. It has a college and a sports academy, and is situated close to Liverpool city centre. Visit www.greenbank-project.org.uk for more details.

The Richmond public house is a short wheel/walk from the centre. It is fully accessible, including toilet facilities, and is popular with patients and their families.
