Walkers
SIA recognises that not all SCI individuals are wheelchair users. A few people are able to get around some, if not all, of the time without assistance.
But a walker can have just as many problems to deal with as any other SCI person (sometimes more), and so are just as welcome to ask SIA for support. Member Clive Evans talks about his situation…
"I sustained a compressed fracture of my spine in 2000 and the medical professions view of my injury was that, once the bones had healed, I would live a normal life. The reality is something different.
Whilst I may be walking, I can be in pain a lot of the time and I can only control it by either correcting my posture, or just tolerating it. The first couple of years following my accident I was lead to the impression that the pain was a manifestation of the mind, or something else unrelated to the injury. It was only through seeing similar situations on television medical dramas and, more importantly, talking to SIA that I realised my SCI was the cause.
SIA has been more than just a source of information to me. The medical profession made me feel alone and isolated, but through SIA I know there are people that are interested in helping me by offering advice and support.
Through this website I hope that others can feel the same."
