Peer Support Expands

We have recently had a recruitment drive for additional Peer Support staff to support our expansion of the service. As a result we are pleased to announce the appointment of new Peer Link workers for the Southport, Oswestry, Salisbury, Stoke Mandeville, Stanmore and Sheffield SCI Centres,  and also new Peer Support Officers for Oswestry and Stoke Mandeville centres.

All new staff will be introduced in the February issue of FORWARD. Meanwhile this recent expansion means that we are now able to offer ongoing support to a greater number of newly injured people after discharge from hospital, building on the service already provided at the Cardiff and Middlesbrough SCI Centres. This is a crucial development of one of our frontline services, and we hope to have Peer Link workers for all SCI Centres by mid-2008.

TAXI!

The accessibility of taxis hit the headlines again last month as Baroness Nicky Chapman spoke on BBC News about the difficulties she has experienced using taxis as a wheelchair user. Despite the accessibility issues covered in the DDA. there is only a voluntary code governing local authorities in regard to accessible taxis and many taxis are still not accessible to wheelchair users.

Disability Network, RADAR, would like to see national regulations brought in and have been campaigning for the last 10 years for regulations to make taxis fully accessible.

Healthcare for London: Consulting the Capitol

This is a consultation document currently in circulation which outlines ways in which health services in London could be really improved over the next ten years. It is asking for feedback from the public by providing a questionnaire which relates to the document. You don't have to fill out all of the questions and people are invited to make their own comments if preferred. If you would like to read the document (there is a long and short version) and complete the consultation questionnaire go on the Health for London web site. The questionnaire can be completed on line by clicking the button called 'make your views known now'. Please be aware that the questionnaire is not found on the first page you enter.
