The Great British Fish and Chip Supper is one of SIA's largest Community Fundraising event. The event started in 2009 and there has been over 180 fish and chip suppers held across the UK iand in the three years we have raised over £20,000 enabling SIA to provide more support and information to spinal cord injured people and their families.
There is nothing more than having good old fish and chips on a Friday night after a hard week at work and to start the weekend. It is a great opportunity to have a night off from cooking and enjoying a good traditional British supper which is a success with everyone.
The Great British Fish and Chip Supper is all about getting together with friends and family and having fun. If you would like to host your own Great British Fish and Chip Supper but need a few hints and tips then let us help with a few menu suggestions and tips to make it perfect. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS ORGANISED A SUPPER - WE HAD 150 SUPPERS TAKE PLACE THIS YEAR AND HERE IS A TESTIMONIAL OF JUST ONE OF THEM:
On Friday 20th May, Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Raising Day, we organised a Quiz with Fish n chip supper at our local community centre. We invited 60 of our friends and fami ly and were delighted that 48 were able to make the event.(The non-attendees all sent generous donations to the cause) I am a T3 complete Paraplegic as the result of a mountain bike accident in 2006 and it is the support of these people who have kept me going through difficult times. I printed off an information sheet of the working of the SIA and also talked about my role as a mentor for BACKUP. Teams of 4 were formed and came up with some interesting names, mostly based on their perceived inability to answer quiz questions. I had drawn up 8 rounds of 10 questions covering the usual areas of General Knowledge, History, Geography, Music, Sport, Literature, Food and Drink. The round which saw the teams looking most confused was the one entitled "Fish n Chips" and although the majority recognised that it was Kirsty McCall who sang "There's a boy works down our chip shop swears he's Elvis" they had difficulty making the fishy connection with Alexander the Great (Zander is a fish often called the pike-perch, not the kind you find in the Trent & Mersey Canal). The chips were delivered, freshly cooked and piping hot at 9pm from "Henry's Fish and Chip Shop, Horsefair, Rugeley" and while the contestants tucked in they also did a picture quiz containing 50 images of well known characters, monuments and cars featured in films(this was of great interest to the males in the audience and my brother in law asked for bonus points for being able to identify the make of the cars!) The team of young ladies who scored highest on this activity donated their £15 prize back into the fund. Everyone signed the Gift Aid Form in order for the Charity to receive an extra 20%.We also had a raffle with prizes donated from friends, one of my cousins unable to attend had bought £20 of tickets but after 3 of his tickets were drawn his sister agreed we should not pull any more of his out of the hat!!The grand total at the end of the evening was £250. All agreed it had been a great night and we will definitely be doing it again next year. The half time break was so hectic that we forgot to take photos, so the attached pics were taken during the last round of the evening.
