What an action packed 2012 we have had! A sea of red, white and blue swept across the UK as we all came together to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, London 2012 Olympics and more recently the 2012 Paralympics
One Paralympian you may recognise is Steve Brown, GB Wheelchair Rugby Team Captain, and former SIA Peer Adviser. Steve joined SIA’s Peer Advice team back in 2007, after he broke his back in a fall, whilst working abroad.
Steve was just 18 when he was spinal cord injured (SCI). He underwent rehabilitation in the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Manderville. It was here that Steve was introduced to SIA’s Peer Advice service, assisting him, as he came to terms with his injury and rebuilt his life. So impressed with the service, Steve decided to become a Peer Adviser himself, giving something back to the SCI community and passing on the confidence and words of wisdom given to him.
During his time with SIA, Steve offered practical, one to one, advice, support and information throughout peoples’ rehabilitation.
In order to progress his professional Wheelchair Rugby career with Team GB, Steve left SIA in 2009. Since then we have continued the hard work and support he provided as Peer Adviser, helping all those affected by SCI.
We know that with the right support and perseverance during rehabilitation, Steve was lucky enough to fulfill his goals, inspiring many people along the way. Unfortunately, not all newly injured people are as lucky as Steve. Not everyone receives the vital advice and support they need to help them rebuild their lives with SCI.
We want to grow the support we offer, helping more people as they rebuild their lives and set new dreams, like Steve did. A donation to SIA could help us support more SCI people and increase the hours of Peer Advice available.
SIA is a user led charity reliant on kind donations, from people like you, to continue our unique and valuable work.
Every penny you give, makes a difference and will enable us to keep our Peer Advice service going, helping people who really need us.
We believe life needn’t stop because you are paralysed, and hope you do too!
