This year, the 28th Guttmann Conference was held at The Lion’s Quay Hotel in Oswestry on 24th June 2011. Over 120 delegates from across the UK participated in an interesting day of a diverse range of presentations from a variety of speakers. Keynote speakers included Dr. John Silver talking about ‘Riddoch, the man who found Guttman’, Dr. Fiona Barr providing an update on ‘The National Spinal Cord Injury Board’, Prof. W S El Masri from Oswestry SCIC talking about ‘The Future in Retrospect’ and Dr Mark Bacon from Spinal research talking about ‘Recent advances in Spinal Cord Regeneration’. Dr. Adnan Al-Kaisy from Guy’s Hospital, London also gave an interesting guest speech on ‘The role of Spinal Cord Stimulation in the Management of SCI patients’.
SIA’s Community Peer Support Officer for the NW also gave an overview of the role of the service in Bridging the gap in service provision for newly injured people being treated in District General Hospitals. This also fedback on the findings of the recently published evaluation of the Community Peer Support service.
