We have recently heard from The Headley Trust which is one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts and is a grant-making organisation with charitable status. It has a small grants programme to help disabled people purchase equipment including but not limited to, electric wheelchairs, adapted computers, communication aids, stair lifts, scooters, adaptations to vehicles - any equipment which will improve quality of life. They are unable to consider ‘day-to-day’ items such as clothing, furniture (unless it is adapted) or holidays. Building work is also excluded as are medical costs. Any grant awarded must not be more than half the total cost of the item. The other half of the balance will need to be raised through other sources before any money is released.
Assessment is made on the basis of financial need and applications should be referred to the trust by a third party, such as a registered charity, social worker, hospital or Citizens Advice Bureau. The grant will be released to the third party when the complete balance has been raised. The Trust is not able to hold a grant open for more than a year.
