Friday 20thMay
Spinal Cord Injuries Awareness Day 2011.
To mark SCI Awareness Day, SIA, in partnership with Aspire, Back Up, Spinal Injuries Scotland and Spinal Research, established the website www.everyeighthours.com to bring awareness of the condition to the general public. Every Eight Hours, so called because it is estimated that three people have Spinal Cord Injuries every day, included information on the condition as well as frank video testimonies and case studies from Spinal Cord Injured people.
In addition to communications from each of the charities, SIA’s Executive Director Paul Smith was asked to comment on recent American research and took the opportunity to highlight the website in interviews on both BBC Television and Radio. The day was also mentioned on Twitter and Facebook by a variety of sources, from Olympic rower James Cracknell to ITV soap, Emmerdale.
