I am Kelvin Blake, I am 36 and I live in Bristol. I have a partner, Bridget who has a 14 year old daughter Roisin. I work for BT as a Programme Manager, managing large IT and Business change projects for major customers. I sustained my SCI following a motorcycle accident and am now a paraplegic. It's a massive life changing event; I am only just starting to experience the kind of issues and problems many of you have experienced for years.
I have already come up against prejudice and attitudes that truly do not belong in today's world - this has made me want to do something about it. I am passionate and enthusiastic; I am an experienced campaigner having spent 6 years as a Councillor on Bristol City Council (up until 2003) and I have business experience in implementing complex change programmes. I want to build on the fantastic success of SIA by making the organisation more connected with members. I want to achieve this by reinforcing SIA’s position as the main voice for SCI people in the UK; ensuring that SIA continues to punch its weight at a national level, being a friendly voice to Government when it gets things right but also making sure we are critical and push for change when things need improving; help develop strong campaigns that will benefit existing and future generations of SCI people; be accessible to members who have concerns and issues they want to raise.
