Community Peer Support - support in District General Hospitals
What is the Community Peer Support Service?
SIA's Community Peer Support service is delivered by a team of spinal cord injured people and provides practical advice and support for those being treated in District General Hospitals or Neurological/Rehab Centres, and who have sustained damage to the spinal cord either through trauma or illness. Who can benefit?
- Newly injured people - peer support is provided to newly injured awaiting transfer to a specialist Spinal Injury Centre or those who will never be admitted, offering practical support support on life after injury.
- Family members - helping families adjust to the injury by talking to someone who understands and can signpost them to sources of information
- Healthcare professionals in non-specialist settings - inservice training can be delivered to single or multi-disciplinary teams, raising awareness of life with spinal cord injury. This training is CPD certified and carries 1 hour CPD points.
- Spinal Cord Injuries Centre - outreach staff - SIA's Community Peer Support team can help to support newly injured peole awaiting transfer to a specialist Centre
