I have had a spinal cord injury (T12/L1) since 09.57am on 19th September 1984 (you never forget the date). I was a self employed painter & decorator and fell from a ladder through a roof light whilst working. I was treated at Pinderfields from day one and spent 6 months there.
After discharge I attended as an outpatient two days per week doing physiotherapy, archery and wheelchair basketball, which was part of the rehabilitation in those days. There was a wonderful ‘Team Spirit’ amongst the patients and I have made many life long friends. Over the years we have entered numerous competitions together, travelling around Britain and abroad.
I'm married with four children: 1 daughter and 1 grandson+ 3 step-children to my wife.
In order to keep involved with Pinderfields and help newly injured patients, I eventually became an SIA volunteer. This led to me taking up the post of Peer Support Officer in 2001 and now the new role of Peer Adviser in 2009.
I feel my life has been enriched because of my injury, giving me time to travel the world, get involved with many organisations on a voluntary basis and reap the rewards of helping others.
My interests have been numerous over the years and include travel, gardening, wine making, wood turning, caravanning, meeting people, fund raising, DIY, computers, photography, walking (Trike nowadays), socialising (hic!), TV, cinemas etc, etc.
I visit the Pinderfields Centre on Tuesdays from 10.30am until 5.00pm so I hope I will have the pleasure of meeting you there. I can also be contacted on my mobile on 07967 922571.
