The Network of Networks

SIA would like to thank everyone who contributed to the Network of Networks consultations in 2010.

The Network of Networks is an initiative from the Office for Disability Issues (ODI) which seeks to form a two way network of communication between Government and disabled people. The aim of the Network of Networks is to reach as many disabled people at grass roots level as possible, and as such SIA circulated the following two consultations to its members, reports from which have now been submitted to the ODI. These can now be read below.

You can read all 12 organisation's responses to the Independent Living Strategy consultation here.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The Office for Disability Issues consulted on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Convention sets out international benchmarks for the human rights of disabled people. It shows what rights disabled people should have, and enables governments to be judged on whether they have ensured that disabled people do have them.

Independent Living Strategy

Independent living means all disabled people having the same choice, control and freedom as any other citizen – at home, at work, and as members of the community.  This does not necessarily mean disabled people “doing everything for themselves” but does mean that any practical assistance people need should be based on their own choices and aspirations.

We know that disabled people face a number of barriers to independent living.  In March 2008 the Independent Living Strategy was published.  It set out a number of actions that aim to help remove those barriers. The Independent Living Scrutiny Group consulted on the progress of the ILS and which issues continued to be faced by disabled people in 2010.
