Healthcare Professionals skills and competency training
Managing the neurogenic bowel
We are delighted to offer healthcare professionals the opportunity to learn more about neurogenic bowel dysfunction and how to manage it effectively.
Delivered by SIA’s SCI Nurse Specialists, registered nurses with over 50 years combined experience caring for this patient group, the full-day course covers –
- the different presentations of neurogenic bowel dysfunction and their appropriate management
- the importance of stool consistency and factors that affect it
- the skills and knowledge to safely undertake Digital Rectal Examination (DRE), Digital Rectal Stimulation (DRS) and Digital Removal of Faeces (DRF)
- the policies and regulations required to support practice
Participants will examine the theory that underpins effective management of the neurogenic bowel, demonstrate their learning through a written exam and case study work, and have their competency to safely undertake DRE, DRS and DRF signed off by one of our SCI Nurse Specialists following a practical session on an anatomical training model.
The cost is £160 +VAT per delegate, and each course is limited to six participants. Please note our cancellation/non attendance policy, which applies to all SIA training events. The agenda for this training day can be downloaded here.
Info for non-Registered Nurses:
As this training is primarily aimed at Registered Nurses, sessions have previously been restricted to this group. However, due to the demand from other healthcare professionals, we do schedule some sessions in that are offered to non-RNs only. These will be clearly labelled in the list of available dates below. Please note that SIA’s SCI Nurse Specialists are not responsible for delegation of this task- they are only providing education of the required knowledge and skills required to safely perform DRE/DRS/DRF. If the individual chooses or requires further supervision this may be sought from District Nurse, continence nurse, RN within care agency or spinal injuries centre. SIA is not responsible for sourcing or providing this supervision. Contact Karen if you need more information on this.
Please note that places on all courses scheduled for the current training year (to March 2018) are sold out, but please keep checking here for news of confirmed sessions. If you would like to be added to a waiting list in the event of any cancellations, or want to register your details for updates on this and other SIA training and education events, email Karen Mikalsen, Education and Training Co-ordinator, or call her on 01908 604191 x221.
