Housing Secretary launches major consultation on accessibility standards

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick MP has launched a major consultation to consider how best to raise accessibility standards for all new homes, specifically recognising the importance of suitable homes for older and disabled people.

The consultation is aimed at individuals, industries and organisations interested in the Government’s proposed options to raise accessibility standards of new homes. In particular, it considers how the existing optional accessible and adaptable standard for homes and the wheelchair user standard are used, and whether the Government should mandate a higher standard or reconsider the way the existing optional standards are used.

As with all consultations, the Government hope that hearing from the broadest pool of knowledge and experience will help build the strongest evidence base for policy and regulatory change. SIA will be making a submission, but we would encourage all spinal cord injured people and their families and friends with an interest in accessible housing to take part in this consultation.

Further details can be found  on the Government website .    Closing date for submissions is 1December 2020.
