Grandad Wheels – Book Launch

We are very pleased to announce the launch of a very special book on 1 November, with the aim of introducing the topic of spinal cord injury to a younger audience. ‘The Adventures of Grandad Wheels’ are a light-hearted series of children’s books, about the crazy adventures of an SCI grandad, his grandson Charlie, and a whole host of other colourful characters. Each story will delve into the everyday experiences of life as a wheelchair user, but more importantly, will make the readers laugh out loud at the silly adventures of the main characters.

The books have been written and funded by SIA Member Brian Abram, who wanted to show that  – above all – anyone in a wheelchair, whatever their age can still have fun, and live a fulfilled life!

These extracts from the Grandad Wheels website  explain more about Brian and the books themselves:

‘Brian lives in Halifax with his wife Linda and is retired.  After a serious cycling accident in 2013, Brian was left paraplegic and a full-time wheelchair user.  He started writing stories to amuse his Grandson Charles.  After sharing the stories with friends and other wheelchair users, he was encouraged to make them available to a wider audience. ‘

The first book is called ‘Charlie’s Big Idea!’ – ‘Charlie Stewart’s Grandad wasn’t like most other Grandads.  Thanks to an argument with a huge lion, he had to use a wheelchair to get about.  They had lots of fun together, despite Grandad being rubbish at football!  But when Charlie realises his Grandad is a bit bored he decides to arrange something exciting to cheer him up!  And so ‘The Adventures Of Grandad Wheels!’ begin!’

Profits from the sale of this book – and follow-up titles from the five-part series – will benefit two charities close to the author’s heart, SIA and Back Up, and the first book is dedicated to the staff of Pinderfields Spinal Unit who supported him after his injury.
