Sharon’s husband, Will, who sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) after a road traffic accident in 1981 died this year from cancer. During his time in hospital, when good bowel management was more important than ever for Will, Sharon was left to deal with all his SCI care needs.
Poor care like this has to end. It’s not acceptable that Will did not get the quality healthcare he needed when he was in hospital, and that Sharon had to be his nurse.
In July this year, an official Patient Safety Alert on safer bowel management for SCI patients was issued – a tremendous milestone in the fight to get SCI people the care they deserve. But the job is far from done. There are 251 NHS Trusts across the country and we have to ensure they are all taking action. SIA has a big task ahead. But we know it needs to be done.
