We’ve gathered spinal cord injury specialists from across the country, to present exciting sessions exploring essential SCI knowledge.

Part of the event will offer concurrent educational sessions, where you will select the topic of your choice to attend, but you will gain access to on-demand viewing of all session after the event. See our agenda below for the range of topics which will be covered:

  • Pain and its effects on mental health – This session will explore the complex relationship between pain and mental health in individuals with SCI, emphasising how these factors influence rehabilitation outcomes and quality of life.
  • Unseen and Unheard: Managing swallowing and communication issues in people with spinal cord injury – This session will explore the often-overlooked challenges of dysphagia and impaired communication. It emphasises their profound impact on health, nutrition, and social connection.
  • Exploring the urological challenges of people with spinal cord injury – This session explores the urological challenges faced by people with spinal cord injury, focusing on neurogenic bladder dysfunction, risk of recurrent infections and long-term management strategies.
  • Function Forever: Lifelong Upper Limb Care in SCI – This session will share patient stories and explore techniques for upper limb care. Presented from occupational therapy and physiotherapy perspectives, the session will provide a holistic approach to SCI upper limb management.
  • Panel discussion and Q & A – The closing session, which takes the form of a panel discussion and Q&A, will offer an opportunity to reflect on what has been covered and how you can apply that knowledge in practice. Questions can be submitted throughout the event.

Speakers

  • Dr Jackie McRae, Associate Professor and Director of Research at City St George’s, with over 30 years of clinical experience as a Speech and Language Therapist in critical care
  • Sheilagh Reid, Consultant urological surgeon at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Unit in Sheffield. Sheilagh is also an SIA Trustee. 
  • Altaf Mangera, Consultant Urologist at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries centre and Royal Hallamshire Hospital (Sheffield)
  • Nicholas Boxall, Consultant Urologist at the Princess Royal Spinal Cord Injuries Centre and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital
  • Susie Wood, SCI clinical specialist, Spinal Injuries Association
  • Frances Moya, SCI specialist physiotherapist, Spinal Injuries Association
  • Susanna Turnbull, SCI specialist occupational therapist, Spinal Injuries Association
  • Ian Anderson, SIA Trustee with lived experience of spinal cord injury after sustaining an injury in 1997, shortly after turning 19.
