Welcome to the Frank Williams Academy
The Frank Williams Academy, transforming the lives of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) through education, training, research and development.
The academy was launched on 23 April 2023 and in the two years since it has improved the knowledge of bowel, respiratory and skin management of nearly 4,000 people working in healthcare settings.

Sir Frank Williams
After a brief career as a driver and mechanic, Sir Frank founded Frank Williams Racing Cars in 1966. 20 years later a road car accident near the Paul Ricard circuit in March 1986 (aged 44) resulted in Sir Frank sustaining a spinal cord injury and rendered him unable to walk. Despite the additional challenges faced Sir Frank went on to become one of the most recognised and respected people in Formula 1. Between 1979 and 1997, the Williams F1 team won seven drivers’ championships, nine constructors’ championships and a total of 113 wins. Sir Frank Williams was knighted by the Queen in 1999 and sadly passed away in 2021, aged 79.
Sir Frank was a big supporter of SIA and his legacy now lives on through the work of the academy and through his daughter Claire who is a vice president of our charity.
By educating and informing more and more people with the knowledge they need, we can support everyone with a spinal cord injury to live a fulfilled life after injury.
What does the Academy do?
We offer a range of a range of virtual and face-to-face training courses to healthcare professionals and care givers, including personal assistants, carers and family members, all of which is facilitated by colleagues in our Clinical Team. Our clinicians have many years’ specialist experience in spinal cord injury.
Research is the cornerstone of understanding ways in which we can ensure quality of life after spinal cord injury, and the Frank Williams Academy is dedicated to bringing together vital specialist expertise across the health & care sector.
Our SCI knowledge hub is designed to equip you with information on everything from bowel and bladder management and skin care to mental health and your right to accessibility.
The Health and Care Advisory Group are multidisciplinary clinical experts across the field of spinal cord injury who will inform and support the work of the Frank Williams Academy.
SCI is life-changing, but it needn’t be life-limiting. By creating the Frank Williams Academy we can help everyone affected by spinal cord injury to rebuild their lives.
