Client testimonial
SC sustained a T8 incomplete spinal cord injury following a motorcycle accident while riding with his brother, his closest friend. When we first met SC, he was in a very dark place, disconnected, demotivated, and struggling to find a reason to face each day. His bond with his brother was incredibly strong, so we took a unique approach by incorporating his brother into his care team, while ensuring clear professional boundaries were maintained.
Clinically, SC’s needs were well-defined, but we knew true progress would come from engaging with him on a personal level. Through everyday conversations about hobbies and interests, SC revealed a surprising ambition: he wanted to become a Para-canoeist. He had never tried it before, but the passion in his voice made it clear this was his North Star.
From that point on, everything changed. His multidisciplinary team (MDT) plan, rehab milestones, staff training, and risk assessments were all aligned with that goal. We don’t shy away from risk; instead, we manage it safely and positively to help clients achieve their dreams.
SC’s determination and support from his tailored care team paid off. He progressed, trained, and eventually competed for Team GB. This achievement gave him immense pride and fulfilment. He also returned to work, reclaiming not just his independence, but a powerful sense of purpose.
SC’s journey is a true testament to what’s possible when care is built around the individual, their aspirations, and a belief that life can be meaningful again.
Had I not had the comprehensive support package from Complexus Care I wouldn’t have discovered para-canoeing, kayaking then the Va’a (outrigger canoe)
