The Autumn issue of Forward magazine is out now!
It’s autumn, time to dust off our warmer clothes and enjoy the crisp days with a hot drink and a relaxing hour or two spent reading the newest edition of Forward magazine. You can read powerful real-life stories, discover new perspectives and celebrate the incredible people who make our community so special. There is something for everyone in this packed edition so wrap up, dive in and enjoy.
Our cover star for the autumn issue is SIA’s Champion for Performing Arts, Marc Brew. Marc is an award-winning Australian performer, director and choreographer, whose work has been toured across the globe. After sustaining a spinal cord injury in 1997, Marc returned to dance, exploring movement using his wheelchair, paving the way for other disabled and non-disabled dancers and challenging perceptions of what a dancer should be. Read his remarkable story and why he believes it’s so important to represent disability in the performing arts.
****** Our Forward Focus section is a 7-page special on Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES). We explore the realities of trying to stay fit while living with CES, we talk to Deryck Deakin who shares how his experience of the condition has led him to want to support others. We look at the NHS ‘Getting It Right First Time’ (GIRFT) pathway and how successful it’s been in better diagnosing CES since it’s implementation in 2023, and we hear from Cauda Equina Spinal Cord Injury (CESCI) founder Allison Whitehorn on dispelling myths around CES.
