The Travel with Confidence Blog (November Update)
It’s been a busy couple of months for the Travel with Confidence team as we now reach the next stage of this very exciting project.
“The aim of our Travel with confidence project is to create the ultimate resource for accessible travel information, all made possible with thanks to the funding from the Motability Foundation.”
Purple Tuesday
Did you know that today (12 November) is Purple Tuesday, an annual day where thousands of organisations come together across the world to highlight the importance of accessibility for all. Here at SIA we will be celebrating the day by attending a special event in the Milton Keynes shopping centre where a number of locally based charities will promote the importance of accessibility by wearing purple and spreading the word of our own services and support networks. This support will soon include the Travel with Confidence project which over the Summer has been gathering information from the SCI community to understand what is important to people with spinal cord injury when travelling. You can see the results of the survey HERE.
QEF Open Day
On 29 October the Travel with Confidence team supported three SIA members to attend the Queen Elizabeth Foundation mobility open day in Carshalton, Surrey. This full day event provided them with the opportunity to speak to therapists and clinical staff about a variety of travel options, such as driving, accessible transport, flying, community transport and wheelchair services.
Roll Camera! Action!
The TWC project is now reaching a very exciting stage as the team now embarks on the creation of some brand new videos for our website’s knowledge hub. The eight part series will guide you through a variety of important topics, from train travel, driving, wheelchair assessment, bus & coach travel, ferries and air travel.
This week filming will begin in the North East & Yorkshire with videographers Second Sight and our models with SCI. So please keep your fingers crossed for good weather this November and we look forward to be able to share the finished films with you in the Spring.
Location, Location Location!
Susie, our SIA clinical specialist in the North-East has been supporting the Travel with Confidence team throughout the project and delighted to confirm two venues in and around York for filming a typical ‘day out’ for someone with a spinal cord injury. First up she visited The National Railway Museum where she met with James (PR) and Izzy (Community and Events) for a tour of the site. They have been so supportive, and we can’t wait to film in such a beautiful place. Then it was off to the Yorkshire Arboretum, which will make a wonderful back drop to our outdoor segment. On the day we hope to share how the use of the tramper vehicle can help access more and more of these special places.
