Improving Women’s Health after Spinal Cord Injury
In a huge win for our Women’s Health Campaign, the Women and Equalities Select Committee has recommended that the Government require specialist support and guidance is provided to women after sustaining spinal cord injury.

This recommendation comes after we submitted written evidence, two women with spinal cord injury gave oral evidence, and the Committee heard from other women with disabilities.
Select Committees are powerful cross-party scrutiny bodies whose role is to examine the work of Government departments, gather evidence, and make formal recommendations which the Government must respond to.
Their reports carry significant political weight and often shape national policy. Women with spinal cord injuries, and other physical disabilities, face significant challenges in accessing the healthcare they need.
Through our evidence on behalf of the spinal cord injury community, the Select Committee have gained an understanding of these challenges and appreciated that the Government must act.
As well as recommending that the Government mandate specialist advisory services on women’s health within all spinal cord injury centres, the Committee have recommended that women’s health and disability be properly embedded within medical education, school curricula, and the forthcoming Women’s Health Strategy.
The recommendations not only benefit women with spinal cord injury, but all women with physical disabilities for whom we advocated. We will continue to highlight and address the challenges that block women from accessing the care they require.
It is imperative that the renewed Women’s Health Strategy addresses these issues further, and we will continue pushing for safe, dignified, and compassionate care for all.
