39 Cyclists, 300km and £100,000 raised for SIA

This May, 39 cyclists travelled to France to take on SIA’s 300km overseas cycling challenge from Toulouse to Bordeaux.

Over three consecutive days, the team pushed themselves to complete the challenge, including four inspiring hand cyclists: Gary Dawson, Dave Eastham, Jamie Rhind and Mike Lewis.

Jamie Rhind was awarded this year’s “Ride Hero” award for his determination and achievement throughout the event. Mike Lewis, who does not have a spinal cord injury (SCI), chose to complete the challenge on a hand cycle to better understand the physical demands of relying on arm power alone.

The team also included Alia Zaloum, who lives with an SCI but her injury is less visible, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t live with and manage similar complications and medical routines, highlighting that SCI affects everyone differently, Alia quietly pushed on through the challenge, bagging herself the ‘Cool as a cucumber’ award.

Together, the team raised just over £100,000 for SIA, an incredible achievement made possible thanks to the dedication of the cyclists, the generosity of supporters, and the backing of our sponsors JMW Solicitors, Fletchers Solicitors and CFG Law.

Thank you also to the Sportive Breaks bike crew for helping safely deliver the event.
