‘Provide funding to support Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening for Disabled Women’
As part of the Spinal Injuries Association’s Women’s Health Campaign, we have just launched a petition urging the government to increase funding to ensure every medical facility is properly equipped to provide equal care.
Women with spinal cord injuries, particularly wheelchair users, face significant barriers in accessing essential health services like breast screenings and smear tests. This lack of accessible equipment in many UK medical facilities not only violates the Equality Act 2010 but also perpetuates health inequalities.
A 2021 study revealed that 63% of disabled women had difficulty accessing routine screenings, and another study showed that almost two-thirds of women with physical disabilities had not been able to attend smear tests. These statistics highlight a critical issue: women with disabilities are being excluded from vital health services, leading to potential delays in diagnosis and treatment.
Join us in advocating for equal healthcare for all women particularly women with spinal cord injuries. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that no woman is left behind in receiving the care she deserves.
Please sign the petition and share it with friends, family, acquaintances, and anyone else who you think would be able to sign it and help us reach the magic number of 10,000 signatures when the government have to respond.
** Deadline for signatures: 20 July 2025 **
We want the government to increase funding to ensure every facility is properly equipped to provide equal care. All women, regardless of disability, should be able to access cancer screenings without fear of exclusion, humiliation, or inadequate care.
