Statement on the inclusion of disability hate crime as a criminal offence
Our statement on the inclusion of disability hate crime as a criminal offence in the Crime and Policing Bill
Disability hate crime is rising at an alarming rate, yet justice has remained out of reach for most victims. Reports increased by 43% in the past year alone, but fewer than 1% are taken further.
That’s why we welcome the inclusion of a vital amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill which was debated and agreed in Parliament last week. This will finally recognise disability hate crime as a specific criminal offence, in line with the Law Commission’s recommendation in 2021.
This change is the result of sustained collaboration across the disability and equality sector. The Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) is proud to have worked alongside a broad coalition of disability rights and social justice organisations, as well as the Home Office, to push for this long overdue reform.
This is a major step forward. It sends a clear message that violence and hostility directed at disabled people will no longer be overlooked and must be treated with the seriousness it deserves.
Disabled people have the right to safety, dignity and justice.
This change brings us closer to achieving that.
